This 99,843 sf, 3-story facility consists of 3 primary programmatic elements: a parking facility for 80 sanitation trucks including a truck wash, a 6-bay repair shop accommodating hydraulic equipment, and an office area with a conference room, staff lounge and locker rooms. This project posed numerous challenges as the site had poor soil conditions and generally high seismic loads. To overcome these problems, DeSimone utilized an integrated structure combining pile-supported structural concrete slabs with steel frames, rolled shapes, open web joists, and trusses. The design team closely monitored the load to ensure that the design would have minimal impact on the site. A combination of moment frames, knee braces and brace frames were used, providing additional structural support. To further safeguard the structure against collision damage, DeSimone encased the base of the steel columns in concrete and installed equipment racks using break-away clips that pull apart upon impact.
