Leading engineering and construction services consulting firm DeSimone Consulting Engineering has expanded its structural engineering leadership in Texas with the appointment of industry leader Thomas W. Taylor, PE, as Principal and Director.
Known in the industry as a design-oriented innovator, Taylor will help lead DeSimone’s structural engineering practice in Dallas.
Taylor brings decades of structural engineering experience to DeSimone. Known as “an architects’ engineer,” he has served as Project Manager and Principal-in-Charge for over 50 structures in the Dallas Central Business District, including the Nasher Sculpture Center, Thanks-Giving Square Chapel, Dallas Police Memorial, Federal Reserve Bank, the Dallas Convention Center, and the AT&T Corporate Headquarters.
“We are thrilled that Thomas has chosen DeSimone for this next chapter of his career,” said Stephen DeSimone, Chairman and CEO of DeSimone Consulting Engineering. “His exceptional track record of success with complex structural engineering projects in Texas further expands our ability to provide superior services to our clients in the region.”
Taylor pioneered the introduction of a range of structural systems, including a precast concrete-stack wall system for parking garages in 1974, the tallest slipform core for high-rise buildings (710 feet) in 1988, and an insulated, load-bearing masonry cavity wall. He also spearheaded the use of tilt-wall construction for ‘high design’ architectural buildings in the early 2000s, such as the Chapel of St. Ignatius at the University of Seattle with Steven Holl Architect.
The architectural community has recognized Taylor with an Honorary Membership in the Dallas Chapter of the AIA and the Texas Society of Architects. A graduate of the University of Texas and member of its Academy of Distinguished Engineers of the Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering Department, Taylor and his wife have been active supporters of the school and helped establish the Thomas Taylor Design Studio, a state-of-the-art design space for teaching the integration of architecture and engineering systems.
Focusing much of his attention on downtown Dallas, Taylor has been active in civic affairs for many years. He has served as Vice President for Programming for the Greater Dallas Planning Council, the Advisory Committee for Thanks-Giving Square, the Cotton Bowl Dome Foundation, the Preservation Dallas Board, and the Dallas Architectural Forum Board.
Taylor joins DeSimone as the firm continues a strategic global expansion to increase its presence in key markets, including recent acquisitions that expand its platform and geographical reach: Canada-based Dowco Group of Companies, specializing in 3D modelling, detailing and other pre-construction services; UK-based DP Squared structural engineers; and Decipher, experts in construction consulting services with offices in London, Manchester, and Dubai.
“I’m excited to join DeSimone during such a pivotal period of growth for the firm,” said Taylor. “I look forward to working alongside leadership and the entire team to enhance the delivery of services to our clients and partners in Dallas and beyond.”
Taylor comes to DeSimone from Datum Engineers, a company he incorporated from Frank Chappell & Associates, which he built into one of the most respected firms in Texas.
Established in 1969, DeSimone is recognized for delivering superior structural engineering services to clients around the world. In recent years, the company’s service offerings have grown to include market-leading façade, forensic, construction consulting, protective design, and integrated design and detailing practice areas.
