DeSimone is excited to announce that Jersey City Urby has won a 2018 Architizer A+ Popular Choice Award for a high-rise residential development. Designed in collaboration with Concrete Architectural Associates, the waterfront tower is, today, the tallest residential structure in the state of New Jersey and stands out as a distinct contribution to the city’s skyline.

Colloquially described as the “Jenga-block tower,” Urby’s structure resembles a series of stacked, cantilevered blocks overlooking the Hudson River.

The project team behind Jersey City Urby was challenged to deliver a rental-housing product that rethinks the definition of “city living,” and more adequately meets the needs of modern urban residents. Though the structure contains nearly 800 individual units, the client envisioned a building that evokes a feeling of community among building residents and promotes tenant interactions. Today, Jersey City Urby introduces a residential concept more akin to a neighborhood than an apartment complex, with particular emphasis on common areas and amenity spaces. Available amenities include a large, open floor, entry lobby café; a ninth-floor roof deck complete with a pool, summer kitchen areas, and a fitness studio; an indoor, communal kitchen and dining area; and a variety of attractive, social spaces to work, relax, and collaborate.

Overall, the design and construction of Jersey City Urby was a dynamic process that could not have been achieved successfully without close collaboration and responsiveness among all design consultants and construction team members.
