5515 Grand Avenue Maspeth Warehouse and Parking Building

  • Located at 5515 Grand Avenue in Maspeth in Queens, New York
  • A 1.2 million sf, four-story warehouse/distribution center, and parking/fleet storage building
  • Site is bordered by Grand Avenue to the south, several one-story buildings to the east, the freight rail lines of NYA/LIRR to the north, and an existing one-story building to the west
  • The north portion of the site is approximately 2,000 ft from Maspeth Creek branches
  • Project is a three-story, 100,000 sf industrial building serving as a warehouse/storage facility
  • Facility features long span column free spaces (50 by 50 ft bays) heavy structural steel beams and columns with metal deck for framed slabs
  • Adjacent to LIRR freight line, requiring approval from NYCTA
  • Foundation utilizes tapered tube friction piles that will be driven for up to 100 ft below grade
  • Facade consists of precast wall panels with window openings

About the project:

  • Structure consisted of a reinforced concrete frame with concrete masonry non-bearing walls and a post-tensioned slab
  • Warehouse storage facility sustained significant fire damage

Scope of services:

  • Investigation included a scope of damage assessment, a reinstatement cost estimation, and a value estimation of the warehouse facility
  • Project team utilized sUAS (drone) based imagery for aerial evaluation of site damage

About the project:

  • Largest power generator in Colombia with a total production of 15,000 MW
  • Generation capacity of 200 MW, with three Francis turbines of 68 MW each, located in an underground cavern, 623 feet deep
  • Fire initiated inside a transformer chamber and spread to the other two transformers located inside the same cavern
  • Fire rose through the first high voltage cable shaft reaching the cable trenches of the electric substation located above ground
