Plaza Coral Gables

  • This mixed-use project covers 6.7 acres and includes a five-star hotel, Class A office space, high-end retail, 229 luxury townhomes and condos, parking garage, public open space, and parks
  • The design is composed of isolated parcels that are infused with a variety of uses and public amenities that provide an integrated pattern that encourages walkability and promotes a sense of interconnectedness
  • Over 50% of the total site area is dedicated to open space, which is structurally supported by an eight-story podium structure
  • Four distinct towers, ranging from 14-22 stories, rise from the podium and open spaces below and serve a variety of uses, including residential, hospitality, and retail
  • Neighbors Faena Bazaar at the northern end of the Faena District
  • Provides additional parking for both the Bazaar and for the Forum
  • Comprised of 235 parking spaces distributed both above and below grade
  • Site’s small footprint presented space constraints that eliminated the feasibility of parking ramps between each level
  • DeSimone elected to design two glass-enclosed mechanical elevators for the transport of both vehicles and valets between levels

About the project:

  • A public-private partnership tasked with replacing 558 aging bridges throughout the area within three years
  • Bridges primarily consisted of precast concrete culvert or box beam structural systems in rural areas on smaller state highways
  • Prime contractor suffered repeated setbacks due to multiple weather-related loss events impacting project schedule
  • Damage to approximately 80 construction sites and partially constructed bridges

  • Investigation included a scope of damage assessment, repair invoice reconciliation, and ROM estimation
